Description
Tree-of-heaven stem. Polarised light micrograph of a cross-section through the stem of the tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus glandulosa). Below the outer layers (red) is a ring of vascular bundles. Each vascular bundle consists of phloem (pink) and xylem (yellow). The phloem transports nutrients to the whole tree, whilst the xylem transports water. Most of the stem consists of a large central pith (blue), mostly consisting of parenchyma tissue. Magnification: x8 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
