Description
Treating venereal disease, 16th century. This illustration shows the discovery of guaiacum as a cure for a venereal disease (sexually transmitted infection). In the left-hand room, a man is depicted ill in bed drinking a remedy, with two attendants, one of whom is holding a herb. In the right-hand room, a medicinal remedy is being prepared. Artwork by Flemish artist Theodor Galle after Jan van der Straet (Stradanus). This illustration, dating from the 1580s, is from Stradanus's 'Nova Reperta' (New Discoveries).
