Description
Total solar eclipse, 7 August 1869, stereoscopic card. These are paired stereoscopic images which provide a 3D image (stereogram) when viewed side-by-side. Total solar eclipses (when the Sun is completed obscured by the Moon) usually occur less than once a year, last only a few minutes and can only be seen from a small area of the Earth's surface. At totality (seen here), the sun's atmosphere (corona) becomes visible. This image was prepared from negatives made by the Philadelphia Photographic Eclipse Expedition, managed by US scientist Henry Jackson Morton (1836-1902), under the direction of US Navy professor John Huntington Crane Coffin (1815-1890) of the Nautical Almanac Office (United States Naval Observatory), Washington DC, USA.
