Description
Timothy Peake (born 1972), British astronaut for the European Space Agency (ESA) arriving at the International Space Station (ISS). This chair will test Peake's vestibular system, the part of the ear responsible for the sense of balance and spatial orientation. Peake served in the British Army from 1992 to 2009, reaching the rank of Major in the Army Air Corps and attaining 3000 hours of flying time. In 2009 he was a successful applicant for one of only six places on ESA's astronaut training programme. He moved to the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany, for the training, starting in September 2009, graduating in November 2010. This made him the first British citizen to be selected as an astronaut by ESA. On 15th December 2015 he became the first British astronaut to visit the ISS after launching on board a Russian Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. Previous British astronauts in space have had US citizenship or flown privately.
