Description
Clouds of a frontal lightning storm. Satellite image, made at thermal infrared wavelengths, of a cloud bank associated with a severe lightning storm. The cloud bank follows the line of a cold front. In this image, the clouds are seen to extend from Central America (lower left), across the Gulf of Mexico and into the south-eastern USA (upper right). A visible light image made at the same time shows extensive lightning activity in this weather system (SPL Ref. E145/380). The data for this image were gathered at 02:43 UTC on 13 March 1993 by an American DMSP military weather satellite.
