Description
Hurricane Katrina approaching the Gulf of Mexico coast of the USA 28th August 2005. Katrina first made landfall near Miami, Florida on August 24th as a category 1 hurricane. It then moved south into the Gulf of Mexico where it intensified to a category 5 storm. It made landfall in Louisiana on 29th August, as a category 4 storm with sustained winds of 240 kilometres per hour. Katrina caused immense damage and flooding and killed over 1800 people. The city of New Orleans was all but destroyed by the hurricane, and the entire city was subsequently ordered to be evacuated. Image taken by the MODIS instrument on board NASA's Terra satellite.
