Description
Theodor Billroth. Historical artwork of the Austrian surgeon Christian Albert Theodor Billroth (1829-1894) at work. He is the elderly bearded man being watched by medical students at Vienna General Hospital, Austria. As the professor of surgery at the University of Vienna, Billroth made advances in abdominal surgery, especially in the use of antiseptics. This enabled him to carry out operations that had previously been too dangerous. He was the first surgeon to remove a section of the oesophagus and to carry out a complete laryngectomy. He also was the first to remove the lower half of the stomach and rejoin the remaining section to the small intestine.
