Description
Portrait of Italian physicist Professor Piero Monacelli, director of the Gran Sasso Laboratory, Italy, since 1992. Gran Sasso is the largest underground physics laboratory in the world, and lies under 1400 metres of rock. Monacelli is seen here at the entrance of the tunnel which leads to it. Monacelli holds a professorship in physics at the University of L'Aquila, Italy, and is a leading figure in elementary particle physics. Experiments involve the detection of solar neutrinos and high-energy particles in the cosmic rays, and a search for magnetic monopoles.
