Description
Tecota Mark VI Vaporizer, circa 1953. TECOTA stands for Temperature Compensated Trichloroethylene Air . Vaporizers convert liquid anaesthetics, in this case trichloroethylene, into gaseous form, and deliver them at the right concentrations for anesthesia. This device featured a bimetallic strip which bent as the anaesthetic vapour cooled, allowing more gas into the vaporizing chamber. This maintained a steady concentration of anaesthetic in the gas reaching the patient. Trichloroethylene was thought less toxic than chloroform, and was less pungent and flammable than ether, the other volatile anaesthetics commonly in use at the time. However, its use was found to cause physiological problems and the advent of halothane, a new and safer alternative, greatly diminished its use.
