Left to right, back row: Norman Hilberry, Samuel Allison, Thomas Brill, Robert Nobles, Warren Nyer & Marvin Wilkening. Middle row: Harold Agnew, William Sturm, Harold Lichtenberger, Leona Woods & Leo Szilard. Front row: Fermi, Walter Zinn, Albert Wattenberg & Herbert Anderson. The photo was taken at the University of Chicago on 2 December 1946, the 4th anniversary of the first self-sustaining chain reaction in the experimental atomic pile (or nuclear reactor) built by the group as part of the Manhattan Project, the US atom bomb programme.
