Description
T Pyxidis recurrent nova, 2011. Images taken before (left) and during (right) the explosion of the recurrent nova (indicated by arrow) in the binary star system T Pyxidis. The star system is made up of a Sun-like star and a white dwarf. The larger white dwarf captures matter from the other star, causing periodic explosions. The stars are in the constellation Pyxidis, around 3,300 light years from Earth.
