Description
Swollen leaf stem of an ant plant (Cordia nodosa). This leaf stem (or petiole) contains an ant colony and is an example of symbiosis. The ants gain shelter and nutrition, and in turn protect the plant from herbivorous insects. Photographed in the Amazon rainforest, Ecuador.
