Description
Swift mission gamma ray burst map. This map shows the 500 gamma ray bursts (GRBs) detected by NASA's Swift mission while in Earth orbit between December 2004 and April 2010. The map projection shows the whole sky, with the Milky Way across centre. The GRBs are shown as green dots. GRBs are extremely high-energy events that can be seen far across the universe. They are thought to be extremely distant, up to 12 billion light years away, and may be the result of a neutron star being torn apart by a black hole.
