Sunspots observed by Janssen, 1893. Sunspots are areas of magnetic activity that are cooler than the rest of the Sun's surface. They range in size from hundreds to thousands of kilometres across. This image was obtained at Meudon in France, by French astronomer Jules Janssen (1824-1907) on 2 June 1893.
