Description
Composite photograph symbolising the Sun's role in the process of photosynthesis. A polarised light micrograph of a tranverse section through the leaf of a tobacco plant, Nicotiana tabacum, is set against a background of the setting sun. The dominant, pear-shaped body is the mid-rib of the leaf. Multicellular leaf hairs project from upper and lower surfaces. Within plant leaves are chloroplasts, the sites of the light reactions of photosynthesis and hence the primary converters of the Sun's energy.
