Description
Sugar cane plantation. 19th century artwork of a sugar cane plantation in Cuba, with a steam train and chimney smokestacks. Sugar canes are harvested from the fields, and then shredded and crushed to extract the sweet, sugary juices. Further refining is then carried out to produce sugar. The fibrous solid part of the canes can be burnt to power the other processes. Artwork taken from Grands Hommes et Grands Faits de l'Industrie (Great Men and Great Facts of Industry), France, circa 1880.
