Description
Foam nest tree frog nest. Frothy nest of the foam nest tree frog (Rachophorus leucomystax) on a branch. When the female lays her eggs she secretes albumen, which is whipped up by her hind legs into a froth. The froth hardens on the outside while remaining liquid on the inside, protecting the eggs from dessication. The nest is positioned over water. When the tadpoles hatch the nest ruptures, dropping them into the water below where they continue their development. Photographed in Livingston, Zambia.
