Description
Storing blood platelets. Bags of platelets, from donor blood, being stored in an incubator to keep them fresh. Platelets (thrombocytes) are essential for blood clotting. For storage, the platelets are concentrated in the plasma, the liquid component of blood, giving it a yellow colour. The other cellular components of the blood have been removed for use elsewhere. Platelets are used in treating platelet deficiencies like thrombocytopenia. Bags of platelets can be stored at room temperature for up to five days.
