Description
Stinging nettle stem. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through a stem of the stinging nettle plant (Urtica dioica). The layers from outer to centre (some very thin) are an epidermis (outer layer), collenchyma (light-blue), parenchyma (black with starch grains), phloem fibres (bright blue), phloem (dark yellow), cambium (violet), and xylem (yellow). There are medullary rays (black) in the xylem. The pith has broken down, leaving a central gap. Magnification: x5.5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
