Description
Stinging nettle hairs. Polarised light micrograph of three stinging hairs from a stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) leaf. When brushed against, the hairs break off and their tips penetrate the skin, injecting a mixture of acetylcholine and histamine. These cause the painful and inflammatory response, respectively. Magnification: x90 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
