Description
Stegodon ganesa, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal is a proboscidean, an example of the group of animals from which elephants evolved. S. ganesa is known from fossils in the Siwalik Hills of India, dating from the Pliocene (5 to 2.5 million years ago). The long tusks were closely placed together, with no room for the trunk between them. Stegadon reached a height of nearly 4 metres.
