Description
Statue of Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), British mathematician and arguably the greatest scientist in history. This statue is in the chapel of Trinity College, Cambridge, where Newton served as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. This post has subsequently been held by other remarkable scientists including Paul Dirac and the incumbent Stephen Hawking. Newton's contribution to mathematics was his 'Method of Fluxions', now known as the Calculus. Newton had to derive this branch of mathematics to provide a rigorous and elegant proof of his laws of motion. Newton was the first scientist to be knighted, and on his death was buried in Westminster Abbey.
