Description
Startled Burchell's zebras (Equus burchelli) departing a waterhole. This species of Zebra is also called the Plains Zebra in some countries. These wild horses are found on the grassy plains of eastern and southern Africa, living in herds of several hundred individuals. It feeds on grass, leaves and shoots. The zebra is an important prey animal for large carnivores such as lions, although it can outrun them over long distances. When fleeing from predators, a zebra herd remains together in a close-knit group. This behaviour, combined with the striped patterning, may make it more difficult for a predator to select a target. Photographed in Etosha national park, Namibia.
