Description
Underside of a starfish. Skin surface of a cushion starfish, Culcita novaeguinae. The skin on the underside of a starfish is highly specialised and features protective spines, rows of tube feet used for movement and papulae, which exchange respiratory gases with the water. Cushion starfish are large and have very short arms. In Culcita sp. the arms are so short that the starfish appears to be pentagonal. Photographed off Sabah, Malaysia.
