Description
Star trails. Star trails around the South Celestial Pole. Star trails are captured by long- exposure photography, in this case 11 hours and 41 minutes. The lines of light are made by the relative movement of the stars through the night sky as the Earth rotates. The centre of the concentric trails, called the South Celestial Pole, is the point in the sky directly above the earth's South Pole. The colours of the trails reveal the variety of colours of the planets and stars. Photographed in Australia, light pollution from Sydney 300km away can be seen at the bottom of the image. 11-June-1994
