Description
Composite image of LDN 1551, a region of star formation in an area of dust and dark nebulae near the southern end of the Taurus molecular cloud complex. Also catalogued as Sh2-239 the region lies about 450 light-years away. LDN 1551 contains an unusually large number of young protostars (early stages of star formation) and more evolved young stellar objects (YSOs) for such a small region. Many of these protostars are very active and produce powerful energetic emissions. It is estimated that this region of star formation contains material equivalent to about 50 times the mass of the Sun. Image data from 8.2 Meter Subaru Telescope (NAOJ) and colour data from the Digitized Sky Survey.
