Description
Spiny rush stem. Polarised light micrograph of a section through a spiny rush stem (Juncus actus). Vascular bundles can be seen (purple/red) containing xylem (larger openings, purple) and phloem (smaller openings, red) tissues. Xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant, while phloem transports carbohydrates and plant hormones around the plant. Magnification: x44 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
