Description
Spectrum of light experiment. 19th-century illustration of a method of obtaining a spectrum of colours from sunlight. A beam of light allowed in through a slit (left) is passed through a lens and then a triangular prism (centre). This disperses and refracts the light. Different colours of light refract more than others, producing a spectrum of colours that is displayed on the screen at right, the same colours seen in a rainbow. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
