Description
South American frogs, 19th-century illustration. At upper left and upper right is Darwin's frog (Rhinoderma darwinii), from Chile and Argentina. At centre and left and right is Rhinella spinulosa found in the Andes. At bottom is the Argentine horned frog (Ceratophrys ornata). The older binomial names used here are Phryniscus nigricans and Uperodon ornatum. This page of illustrations is Plate 20 from the 1843 volume on reptiles ('Part V: Reptiles') that forms part of the multi-volume work 'The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle'. This work described the animals collected and observed by the British naturalist Charles Darwin during the survey voyage of HMS Beagle during the years 1832 to 1836. This expedition established Darwin's reputation as a naturalist. 'The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle' was edited by Darwin and published between 1838 and 1843. The volume on reptiles was written by British naturalist Thomas Bell. The artist is named here as Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins.
