Description
Sophia Schliemann. Portrait of Sophia Schliemann wearing some of the gold and jewellery discovered during the excavation of the legendary city of Troy. Sophia was the wife of Heinrich Schliemann (1822-90), a German businessman who had retired to become an archaeologist. He discovered the ruins of Troy in 1870 at Hissarlik, Turkey, as part of an attempt to prove the truth behind ancient Greek legends, particularly the account of the Trojan War in Homer's Iliad. Schliemann believed that this jewellery had belonged to Helen, one of the heroines of the Iliad.
