Description
Solar flare, June 2011, SDO image. This is an M-2, or medium sized, coronal mass ejection (CME). CMEs are intense eruptions of radiation and hot plasma (ionised gas) from the surface of the Sun. Mass ejections such as this can cause a variety of effects if they are directed toward Earth, including powerful aurora displays and electrical blackouts. Image obtained by the Solar Dynamics Observatory on 7th June 2010.
