Description
Slime mould fruiting bodies. Macrophotograph of brown fruiting bodies (sporangia) of a slime mould (Stemonitis sp.) growing on rotting wood. Slime moulds are not fungi, but a separate group with complex life cycles. They can live freely as single cells, but aggregate together to form multicellular reproductive structures when unfavourable conditions occur. Photographed by the USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab: an organisation dedicated to identifying, cataloguing and monitoring bees and other species.
