Description
Sir John Murray, (1841-1914), Scottish-Canadian marine zoologist and a founder of oceanography. Murray was born in Canada and educated at Edinburgh University, Scotland. He was appointed as the naturalist on Wyville Thomson's Challenger expedition during 1872-1876. This expedition collected organisms and physical data from the world's oceans. He became editor-in-chief of the reports of the voyage. Murray also took part in numerous other expeditions and measured the depths of Scottish lakes. He wrote extensively on marine and freshwater biology, coral reef formation and oceanography. He was knighted in 1898.
