Description
Sidney Webb (1859-1947), British socialist. Webb wrote extensively on socialism, trade unions and communism. He was one of the co-founders of the London School of Economics in 1895. He and his wife founded the New Statesman magazine in 1913. Elected a Labour Member of Parliament in 1922, Webb held a succession of political offices under Ramsay MacDonald. He was President of the Board of Trade (1924) and Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (1929-1930) and the Colonies (1929-1931). He was made Baron Passfield (1929) and appointed to the Order of Merit (1944). Bain News Service photograph.
