Description
Space shuttle Discovery (mission 51-A, the 14th shuttle mission) showing the retrieval of Palapa B-2, a stranded communication satellite. Astronaut Joseph Allen, wearing a manned maneuvering unit (MMU), a motorised backpack, dives over the top of the remote manipulating arm as the satellite is lowered into the cargo bay for the return trip to earth. Westar VI, a second damaged satellite, was retrieved in like manner. Two new communication satelites were deployed on this eight day mission lasting from the 8th-16th November 1984.
