Description

Shuttle photograph of the island of Hawaii looking slightly east of north. The Mauma Loa volcano sits prominently in the centre of the island, the darker lines arranged radially around the central vent result from ash and pumice along the lines of the lava flows. The Kilauea crater,just to the right, is the islands only other active volcano. The Mauna Kea, near the top, is either dormant or extinct. The photo demonstrates the remarkably clear and cloudless conditions over the centre of Hawaii which account for it's popularity as a site for observatories. Notice that the island perturbs the prevailing north-easterly winds to produce extensive cloud wakes on it's leeward side.
