Description
Shuttle Endeavour landing. View of the space shuttle Endeavour landing at the end of mission STS-89. The parachute deployed behind Endeavour is used to reduce the landing run, reduce the wear on the brakes and to provide increased directional stability in cross-wind landings. Mission STS-89 flew on 22-31 January 1998. Aboard at this time were astronauts Terrence W. Wilcutt, Joe F. Edwards Jr., Bonnie J. Dunbar, David A. Wolf, James F. Reilly, Michael P. Anderson and the Russian representative Salizan S. Sharipov. Wolf was on board the Russian space station Mir prior to this mission, and was replaced by Andrew S. W. Thomas after successful docking between the craft.
