Description
Shuttle Discovery landing. View of the space shuttle Discovery landing at the end of mission STS-96. The parachute deployed behind Discovery is used to reduce the landing run, reduce the wear on the brakes and to provide increased directional stability in cross-wind landings. Mission STS-96 flew on 27th May - 6th June 1999. Aboard at this time were astronauts Kent V. Rominger, Rick D. Husband, Ellen Ochoa, Tamara E. Jernigan, Daniel T. Barry, and the Russian representative Valery I. Tokarev. Representing the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) was astronaut Julie Payette. The aim of the nine day mission was to resupply the International Space Station (ISS).
