Description
Shuttle Discovery at the end of Mission STS-56. The drag parachute, now fitted to the Shuttle Orbiters in the fleet, is seen clearly in this frame. The parachute is used to reduce the landing run, reduce the wear on the brakes and to provide increased directional stability in cross-wind landings. Mission STS-56 flew on 8-17 April 1993. Its primary payloads were the ATLAS-2 atmospheric research laboratory and the Spartan-201 free- flying solar astronomy platform.
