Description
False colour scanning electron micrograph of a section through a single clove of garlic Allium sativum. Each of the curved bands visible here correspond to a leaf, which, as with the onion, are tightly curled around each other. The loosely- spaced internal cells comprising the leaf make up most of the image. These are sandwiched between the outer & inner epidermal layers (closely packed cells). The pungent taste of garlic is due to the presence of a chemical called allyl sulphide. Magnificiation: X 14 at 35mm size. Original is bw print h110/216.
