Light micrograph of a transverse section through the root of the screw pine Pandanus veitchii, a monocotyledon, showing the stele (centre) and cortex (speckled outer region). The thin, white layer surrounding the stele is the endodermis. Within this lies a ring of vascular tissue (holed region) and a central pith. This image shows a section through a subterranian root; some Pandanus species also produce prop roots. Magnification: x3 at 35mm size.
