Description
Scythian antiquities, 18th-century artwork. These objects, from a burial mound near the Tom River in southern Siberia, were described in a 1764 letter by Paul Demidoff (Russian philanthropist Pavel Grigoryevich Demidov, 1738-1821) with later commentary by German naturalist Johann Reinhold Forster (1729-1798). Forster identified the objects as 14th-century Mongol, but later scholarship identified them as 5th-century BC Scythian. Shown here are ornaments, idols, amulets and a copper table with lions and camels. Published in Volume 2 (1773) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
