Description
Schoningen prehistoric spears. Artwork of two of the prehistoric wooden spears found in Schoningen, Germany, in the 1990s. These items, more than 300,000 years old, are the world's oldest preserved hunting weapons, dating from a time before modern humans had evolved. The spears were preserved in mud sediments that now form part of a lignite coal mine. It is thought that they were used by the early human species Homo heidelbergensis, probably in the same way as modern javelins.
