Description
Sawfly (Tenthredo variabilis), light micrograph. On the head there is a pair of antennae and two jaws (mandibles). The thorax supports three pairs of legs and two pairs of wings, which are hooked together in flight. The abdomen is connected by a broad waist. At the end of the abdomen of the female is an ovipositor with a saw edge, used for making slits to deposit eggs in plants on which the caterpillar-like larvae feed. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
