Description
Saturn's moon Titan, Cassini images. Natural-colour image (left) and infrared image (right) of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. Titan's atmosphere is predominantly nitrogen, with sunlight causing traces of methane to form clouds of complex hydrocarbons, with liquid hydrocarbons on the surface. The infrared image penetrates the haze, showing lower-level clouds and surface features. These images were taken from a distance of around 986,000 kilometres, using a range of spectral filters. They were obtained on 21 March 2017, with the narrow-angle camera of Cassini's Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS). The Cassini spacecraft has been surveying the Saturnian system since 2004, with its mission scheduled to end in September 2017.
