Description
Saturn's aurorae. Infrared Cassini image of Saturn and its southern aurorae (green). The aurorae are emissions from hydrogen atoms excited by the solar wind impacting Saturn's southern polar regions. The colours assigned to the infrared bands highlight other features: the large ring system (deep blue), Saturn's internal heat (pink), and bands of clouds (blue). Saturn is some 120,000 kilometres across. This composite image was obtained by Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer on 1 November 2008.
