Description
Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), English diarist and Admiralty official. Pepys was also a Member of Parliament, Fellow of the Royal Society (1665) and its President from 1684 to 1686. As Secretary to the Admiralty (from 1673), Pepys was influential in building up England's navy to make his country a military superpower. Pepys is better known for his diary (1660 to 1669). This contains accounts of the major events of the time as well as details of everyday life. Written in a shorthand code, the diary was deciphered in 1825 and has been widely read and published since.
