Description
Female ruby-throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) feeding whilst in flight. These birds feed on nectar and insects. They measure up to 9 centimetres long and beat their wings from 55 to 75 times per second. Ruby-throated hummingbirds migrate annually from Canada across the 800 kilometre wide Bay of Mexico to overwinter in Central America. Photographed in Maryland in September.
