Description
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) Hummingbird feather shaft, barbs and barbules (Selasphorus rufus). Selasphorus rufus as one of the feistiest hummingbirds in North America (family Trochilidae). The rufous hummingbird is well-known for its aggressive defence of flowers and feeders, even against species many times its own size. It is a relatively small and compact species, with short wings, a tail that tapers to a point, and a slender, straight, black bill. Hummingbirds have the highest metabolism of any homoeothermic animal. Magnification: x23 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
