Description
Richard Jordan Gatling (1818-1903), US firearms inventor. Gatling, born in North Carolina, developed his inventions while working as a storekeeper. By 1845, one of his inventions had earnt him enough money for him to work full-time marketing it. He invented the Gatling gun, an artillery weapon, in 1861 during the US Civil War. It was the first successful design of a rapidly firing gun, but was only used in limited numbers by the Union armies. Gatling founded the Gatling Gun company in 1862. In later years, his inventions improved toilets and bicycles. Modern Gatling guns are used in military aircraft. Taken between 1870 and 1880, this photograph is from the Brady-Handy Collection.
